I peeled open my eyes slowly as the sun rays seeped through under the cracks of my eyelids. What a dream that was, it was definitely peculiar but it felt so real and so familiar, it was as if i had seen those words before, that was indeed strange indeed as I ponder to myself. Anyway, it was already morning, it seemed the events of the day before had truly wasted me out. I put away the television on my lap which seem to only register the endless buzz of static now. I glanced at the watch on my hand, oh my god ! I exclaimed it was already 820 am. With a piping hot cup of “Po Leh” in hand which strangely appeared on the ground beside me I quickly grabbed my thoughts and rushed towards the opening of the forest.
Naturally…….
walking brisky back towards the opening. I cannot help but recall the events that have befallen me ever since my arrival into the forest.
Beginning from the quest of achieving your heart’s desire
to drowning in the sorrows that youth brings
to regretting your actions towards another
to pondering amidst the fireworks above me
to watching the commercials on a television that came from now where
to pondering on the tenets of leadership
to dream of a dream of Rhetorics
and finally its time for me to leave the forest to which i have so dearly called home over the last 7 weeks
yes and in the words of Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman its finally ”time to say goodbye”
If there’s one thing that i have learnt during my stay here, it would be communication in its many definitions and theories would surely remain as merely forms if no one bother to add the “voice” into it.
Perhaps what one can take away from all of this more importantly with relation to us now is the lesson of speaking up whenever you feel the need to, in order to communicate effectively one first needs to be heard. How it is taken by the receiver it purely up to you “voice”. And it is through this voice that you could perhaps finally make a difference be it to yourself through the use of verbal and non-communications devices by being personally centred to the use of kinesics or to others through the mass communication devices such as the wireless telephony infrastructure or the Internet.
and hopefully turn night into day and hardwork into good results

The eyes felt heavy after the total recall, after resisting the beckoning calls of sleep for so long, I slowly slipped myself into a downward spiral of Zzzzzs ……… And then suddenly it appeared before me
Naturally……..
When one falls asleep, one would either dream of happy thoughts or just the hideous nightmares or simply nothing at all. Usually these dreams could be said are of a linear model of communication , where it is purely one sided where there is a message sent through the channel of a dream. One can only wonder who exactly is the Sender behind all these messages? is it us ? i mean isn’t the receiver already us in itself ? are we creating messages for ourselves to subconsiously tell ourselves something like what the world will be ……………. or is it just images out of nothingness and nothing more
The dream began like this
550 years from now the world as we know it would be a much more different place than what we know of today. A place of change definitely, would it be a change for the better or for the worst ? Will we still communicate each other in the same way as each other ? What will we see on the television ? I can only watch in disbelief as the events unwrapped itself before….
The year now is 2558, civilisation as we know it is not what is it anymore, the need and advances of technology have reached a peak. On an experimental space flight out of earth we humans have launched a shuttle to test our very first warp space drive to go from our dear old milky way to finally reach the nearby neighbourhood of Alpha Centuri. The mission was a success but we were spotted. We were seen and we were contacted by a race of new species whom we affectionately label as the Rhetorics as you will find out why soon. These species of people were about 2 metres tall, had hands and legs like us but one thing very particular fascinating about of them was the language and the way they spoke, its strange to even mention it now but when we first meet these Rhetorics they spoke the anglo-saxon tongue of English. Hailing from a planet called Rhetor in the Beetle juice system plus the fact that there is something strange that everyone and each of them can speak so effectively and persuade so effectively that it wasn’t before long it was only right of us to call them the Rhetorics.
Seeing and noticing our knowledge of warp space, they found us worthy of making contact with the purpose of sharing their most advanced technologies with us. In their case, it was the technology of COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY.
Skilled in the arts of Kairos( Time and Space), they seem to exactly to know when would be the right time to talk to our world leaders, they came and visited them when it was a time of great conflict among nations. Unrest in the middle east and religious fundamentalism were rampant throughout the globe, what they needed now most was to communicate with each other without being bypassed(misunderstanding caused by misinterpretation).
Adept in the arts of the Audience, they seem to be able to read the minds of our leader, often knowing their needs and desires, they spoke of things and tales that were of common interests. Often igniting flames of interest and enthusiasm from the other.
Specialised in the arts of Decorum, they spoke with such strength and vigour, it was as it their very lives and existence depends on how good their speech was at that point in time. The gesticulation of their hands and the movement of their bodies (Kinesics) , the adjusting tones used (Paralinguistcs) but more importantly using words that hit the “notes” of their audiences, they were able to rouse the audiences to their feet and sometimes even to the air.
Practising the dimension of using a Low Context Culture, they went forward and spread their influence without sparing any thoughts on restriction or leaving subtle cues on what they were going to do. Fact was everything they said came true. From the speeches given in halls and fields all over the world, they went on to use the already established Convergence of Communication systems existing worldwide to further spread their word. Especially so was the the use of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)which in the year 2558, literally the whole world was linked up to a mainframe and everyone’s life depended on “logging on” to it.
By now i was really wondering what were they talking about that was so interesting and so profound that it seem to take the world by storm and for a person like to give so much credit to them as mentioned above. Floating around in my dreamlike bubble state i found a television before me with a knob on it. I mean what was so popular and happening in the world would surely be mentioned on the television. As Marshall McLuhan states in his theory of Media Determinism“the medium is the message”, the existence of television is definitely essential in how the world has come to be. In this case, I was about to find out finally what exactly the Rhetorics has been saying all along that was so immensely popular from this old and most reliable medium.
Reaching forward seemed like eternity as i drift forward, its hard to walk when your in a dream it seems. I scrambled to turn the knob and switch on the television. “Click” the knob went and a the bright images of the screen flashed before my eyes.
And then it all suddenly made sense, the Rhetorics all along been talking about

The eyes feel strained. I placed the portable television down onto the grass patch beside me. I laid back againist the tree and closed my eyes. Like the gush of wind that embraces your face everytime an MRT zooms past your eyes, thoughts of my Communication Group Project team mates suddenly came into my mind. The memories, the talks, the workdone, the people, the leaders……
Naturally…..

There is rumoured to exist a tale, a tale not for the faint of heart and definitely not for the uninspired……….. of a group of ordinary people but unique individuals in his or her own right
of a group of ordinary people but loyal fellowers in his or her own right
of a group of ordinary poeple but creative artisties in his or her own right
of a group of ordinary people but each one of them a LEADER in his or her own project groups….
What if…… what if this were true and you my humble Reader happen to acquire such a team of Legends in your group how do you fend for yourself against the onslaught of awe and enthusiam, how do you fit your humble and simple stature into the presence of such greatness that is surrounding you but more importantly how do you my dear Reader controil a group of such individuals if you happen to be selected the Leader of them all………
How were you even selected you wonder?
Books tell you that how a LEADER is chosen is basically through a process of elimination. Sarach Trenholm in her book of communication states that Leadership
“is not a story of one member rising through the ranks of triumph because of natural ability or clever manipulation. Rather leadership is a matter of not making mistakes”
In my opinion that is only true to a certain extent cause i believe in the course of time all man being human will eventuality make mistakes, it is only a matter of this relentless and reciless thing we affectionately call TIme. Before we move on lets examine one model of group communication to better understand what has already been said about Leaderships in groups.
In Aubrey Fisher’s model 4 phase model of group development where a group goes through the orientation phase—conflict phase—emergence phase—reinforcement phase. In a nutshell, it isw simply the awkwardness of group members eyeing each other actions through polite formal interactions and then moving on to arguments of opinions thus forming factions as they become more vocal in their views. Following that, a weaker faction will be observed to be stepping down as it loses credibility and facts to support its causes and then finally we move on to the phase where everyone will rally together with favourable comments and feedback in tow to rained down on the victorius faction headed by the now one and only present LEADER of that faction.
On a more local context we simply skip all of the above and jump straight forward to this term call “sabo” a localised term in the hokkien dialect which means the majority of the whole group uniformly votes you in as a Leader skipping all the stages mentioned above. Now as you scratch your suddenly itchy head, you ask yourself how does one gets “sabo” you think to yourself?
Well in most cases in a local context its because you are the one to speak up first
Huh? you exclaimed !
Alright you have approximately less than a minute to get over your “huh?” and “What the”, life is not a bed of roses wake up and smel the thorns. Now lets get into how does one or more importantly YOU the reader set about the task of managing and controlling such a group.
COMMUNICATION ! of course
I hereby propose my very own Seany’s 4 step Process of becoming a good and efficient Leader of Leaders ( with lots of theory and speculation involved ) tiltled L-A-M-E .
LISTENING
I propose before you get your group members to listen to you, you will have first have to Listen to them. Listening involves paying attention to the other individual. When i say paying attention I do not mean merely just nodding your head and agreeing with whoever who says what but instead think of a moment using your rational mind and thought process what the person is actually saying. If the comment is good complement the person if it is not to your expectation,please do not discredit the person but instead give a “maybe” still leaving room for opportunities that perhaps you two could do things in another way using the concept suggested but just modified. IF you cant decide let the group decide. Listening to others is not about using your ears but rather is it a mixture of using your heaf and heart.
AWARENESS
During the initial flow of your group, even legends do have bad days when they appear to frown and keep themselves and not give any worthy feedback at all. When you ask your group members to do a task and they dont deliever, do not immediately assume the worst but rather try to find out why. Your backside do not suddenly feel itchy all of a sudden, its because your underwear is wet , the idea of cause and effect =) Anyway I guess what I’m trying to say is to be Aware of the people around you, their moods and their tones of voice. Often people give away their inner most thoughts and feelings through non-verbal cues such as the Kinesic response which refer to the Body movement and Gesture and Paralinguistics which refers to the Vocal Behavior of the person be it the loudness of their voice and tone. Being a LEADER often requires you to put yourself in the heels and shoes of your group members, it will certainly be most uncomfortable at first putting yourself in the business of others but I can tell you somethings are just worth it. Good impressions last a life time.Lastly let us not forget the idea of being Aware of yourself. The tone and pithch that you talk, the Emblems to do with your actions such as always looking to your watch. Your actions especially you being the leader will all be very much visualise to your group members. Be Aware too of the times when you are wrong and when you know you canot conribute to the discussion with your thoughts, do not be afraid to back down and become a servant for awhile.
MONITOR
When work is being assigned and executed by your fellow group members. Do not resist the fear of being firm when the time arises where there is a need to, Ths means you need to Monitor the work being done by either getting involved directly or indirectly, this means doing part of the work and supervising the work done. If your team members appear to be falling behind on their promises in delievering the relevant workload, stand firm and move forward to ask the person whats wrong (Awarness). If nothing of importance( base on perception ) appears to be bothering, do speak your mind to the individual but do not shout or anything in that case but rather try to let the person understand the implications of his actions on the group.
EXCITE
Lastly we have come to the issue of to “Excite” your group .Every group can do work and if they work hard enough they will get the resulks the good grades etc.. but at the end of it all, they will say “Thank you very much and Goodbye” but not every group can boast itself as a group that stays together even after projects. In short I am speaking about leaving impressions on the group but more importantly leaving an impression on each and every individual in your group. You could Motivate and Harmonise the mood of the meeting by bringing in random acts of Excitement during meetings. Yes I am speaking about “talking cock” the local slang of having fun by talking nonsence with one another. Do not be afraid of bbreaking the norm of commenting and joking about one another during meetings ( dont forget to access the situation first by being mindful of other people’s feeling by cracking jokes that are taken not so lightly by certain individual. One could also create videos that seek to either poke fun or exemplify in a comedic way the actions of others to share with your group at the end of meetings. Be a Gatekeeper-Expediter by always making it the effort to create conversation topics within the group (to get the ball rolling) to create opportuniteis for everyone in the group to interact but more importantly to agree to disagree when the time arises. At the end of it all, when you do get your good grades, bring the group out for dinner for some post project delight. You could say its somewhat of a last project meeting but I choose to believe thats its the beginning of something good worth keeping.
Well not every plan is full proff and if all else fails we can always make our actions more obvious to others to show whos in charge in the actions of JD in the hit television series “SCRUBS”
Preparation, Inspire and Fear as mentioned above whats stopping you from trying it out ?
As this entry comes to a close I just want to make sure that I cannot guranteed the success of such a LAME method or any other methods for that matter. I sincerely believe if one truly wants to find success, he or she has to find his or her own way to the road leading to the wharf where LEADERSHIP docks. When you lose your way in the process never give up on yourself , never give up on hope

With that being said, we look back now to The tale of such a group of unique individuals, it is indeed no rumour, everyone can be a LEADER in his or her right, believe in the people around you, believe in yourself

The 15 days of FireWorks were over, I rested my tea upon the grassy patch under the cool night time sky. The million stars overhead bear witnessing to my every next move. It has indeed been quite a day so far reminiscing the past and it is already night. As the teapot beside me steamed over a bunch of burning twigs prepared, while wating for the tea to be ready to be served, I wonder what to do in the meantine. I looked around and to my utter surprise i chanced upon a portable television near me. This is an indeed one magical forest of Rhetorics I thought to myself. Within no time, the television soon came to life and so did the thoughts………….
Naturally…….
When one watches advertisments on the television, usually they see the adverts before their eyes in a flash. In a day and age where we cannot be help but be bombarded by ads all through the day whether be it at home or when we are out. Ads usually present themselves to us usually when we are the middle of something, like either in the middle of doing something or in the middle of going somewhere. Most of the time our minds are not in the right frame to appreaciate the effort behind such advertisments but there are times where an ad comes along and freezes that moment for a second and for awhile we suddenly forgot what we were about to or going to do. Like a person who approaches us or who stands in our way out of the blue and starts talking to us. We are forced to halt in our tracks and engage him or her. In is with this being say that I cannot help bur realise that ads in itselfs are communicators. And like each different communicator they all use models of communicating.
For the most parts, ads are usually of a Linear Model form of communicators where the Ad being a Sender and where the consumer us being the Receiver. A message like “drinking this brand of milk can make you grow faster” will be send across through the ad usually through a channel which could be a poster or a television ad. It is liken to hearing an ad on a radio and accepting it for what it is regardless of whether you agree with the ad or not. Advetisers of the future know that in a market whereby one is already saturated with ads within a short span of half an hour lets say on a medium such as television, they need something more to hold the audiences attention.
Take the ad below for example
The ad above is on the latest Noka Nseries brand of mobile phones. The first time i watched the clip it felt as i was involved in a conversation whereby the actor is taking me along to all these locations to view his opinions on how a “great movie” should be filmed, plus the music along with the scene it added to the surrealness of the environment being used. And at the end of it all i cannot help but feel influenced by the way the ad was presented and on the message of which was to check out the new features of the Nseries phones. Such ad above is somewhat liken to the Transactional Model of communication.
Before we move on check out the next clip featured below
A Transactional Model of communication speaks of a simultaneous exchange and mutual influence and exchange between communicators at the same time being influenced by its environment. In this case here we have the first communicator that being Nokia and we have the second communicator being present which is the above ad done by a Singaporean, the environment being the social contex the where the ad was being shown.
In the above scenario we have every advertisers dream whereby the ad has successfully managed to communicate with the audience to the point whereby the consumers have actually bought the product or service and now took it upon hir ir herself in making the ads by his or her own accord. The message has thus been intepreted correctly and both receivers and sender has reached a situation whereby both now are in the position to continue effective “communicating” to the masses. Imagine talking loudly to a friend in a crowd and people coming near to you to hear what you are talking about and these people move around and starts to preach whatever you have just said.
It is perhaps also interesting to note perhaps marketing could be seen as a form of communcation whereby marketers are always communicating their messages to their target consumers and hopeing for a form of reply in the curreny of their local country.
They say we manage our perception through communcation and it is with this then i tell you the above. I could be wrong but I definity now wouldnt mind owning a Nseries ………. well at leasrt for awhile till i make my own youtube video.
It is thus in the forest of Rhetorics that t I let loose a smile on my face as the images flashed before me.
FIRE CRACKERS CACKLE overhead, a sound suddenly embracing me from the distance, cries of cheers echo through the forest leaves, “thats strange” i wondered there is no one else here but me how is that possible ? and then suddenly it appeared and happened, the forest was changing.What once was leaves suddenly became dyed red in colour with strange inscriptions on it, the forest was telling me something, something non-verbal, something very chinese, could it be a HONG BAO ? ……….
NATURALLY………
if one were to ask which is more of a useful animal the Ox or the Rat, people would immediately exclaim the Ox is definietly the winner hands down…… Big and strong and a hardworker too, it was on the way of winning the race to reach the Jade Emperor first and thus be labelled as the beginning animal of the Zodiac Cycle but it was not to be
as there upon the Ox’s back the Rat came down just in time to present itself to the Jade Emperor to proclaim itself the first of the 12 Zodiac animals….. =D
With the above in mind, let us ask remind ourselves what Galandriel in the Lord of the Rings said to Frodo Baggins “Even the smallest of things can change the world”
So this Chinese New year be it who you are, where you are from, which part of the Forest of Rhetorics your standing on, may you have faith in yourself and your actions, may you get what you want and what you desire this year round =)

…………………as I stood there watching myself cry.
The rustle of the leaves overhead suddenly caught my attention, embracing my face , drying up the tears….. the cup of tea beside me fell to its side as its warm contents flowed towards the side of my legs…. a prickle of warmth envelop my sense for a moment as i sat there with my back on the tree and then it dawned on me
that it is through regrets that perhaps we learn to communicate with others more effectively
it suddenly occured to me that there is only so much comfort and detachment from reality tears could bring
LOOKIng BACKKK
Moving away primary school I moved into my secondary school years yet another all boys school , for us who came from six years of single sex boys education it was the same old story all over again, but this story suddenly turned for the unexpected with the close proximity of two very prominent girl schools set up around the area
It was also the time of discovery , the age of IRC they call it when “small talks” and “cheapthrills” from asking girls their ICQ or msn were the order of the day, week and even months… haha i was young and naive and perhaps even “dangerous” ( to myself ) i meant
Its funny how couples can hook up with one another over IRC without even meeting up face to face, without any verbal or non-verbal communcations, the only talk you get is basically just black and while and perhaps with abit of colour ( if you change your font colour i meant ) ……… hmmm food for thought ( another story for another time )
From the introductions of 16/m/sji which meant that i was 16 male and from sji i got to knew this girl, for this blog may her name be recalled as Lisa, a girl of few memories but one who left very deep scars indeed …..
She would remain one of my greatest regret of my life
I was out with my friends one day right after school catching a movie, i think the show was “driven” that film by Silvestor Stallone,
She called me all so suddenly, her voice sounded shaky as she told me where she was and said she needed to see me, venturing more on the side of curiousity rather than sympathy of her voice, i left the comfort zone of my friends and went on to meet her
There she was slumped on a chair and pacing around racks and racks of books ( we were at BORDERS ) it was pretty obvious she was disorientated and sad , a face that would forever be etched in my tombs of memory
It was something that I had not seen before in all my travels as a pubescent boy grewing up in an all boyd school surrounding ———-
the look of sadness and gloom on a face of one who constant relishes in constant joy and good cheer, that was the girl I knew of Lisa but it was not the same person that day
Wearing my school uniform and bag, the non-verbal cues she was emitting before me was all too real, I didnt know what to do and I simply went forward and told her to stop moving and stay still , then I opened my mouth
“im sure you will be alright, take care k “
Feelings of fear of this girl leanning towards me or just burdening me with her problems scared me, somemore i was wearing my school uniform, years of conservative raising told me to get out of there, what if someone saw me embracing a girl in my school unifrom, I was afraid of what people might say , everything told me to get out of there in which I soon did
Turning my head away from her, I stepped back and moved away and never looked back

Soaking in regret ever since that day
Although I knew i cannot change the past I definietly know that I at least still have control over the future
It made me see things differently for the years after, how do you speak and interact with the people around you. Like yoh they with emotions too and that the whole world doesnt just revolves you , the world you create revolves around your actions
How you communicate with people around really simply does depends on how would you want to be treated if you were in their shoes instead/……………. I may even go to say that
“One has to be a bastard in order to become a better person”
Only then will one truly seek to understand and be understood in return
Everyday when you finish your day at work or be it at school , sit down and reflect on what has happened for the day and what might happen for the day of tomorrow
Have a conversation with yourself and you may find things you may or may not like but its at least the truth and finding the truth will hopefully ……………….. set you free

The place is strange, trees surround me and i am all alone except my thoughts. I see a cup of tea in the distance. Walking towards it, the fragrance of it filled my senses. The familiar scent of “Po Leh” indeed it is. A deadline to catch, the place seems condusive enough, I then took out my laptop and so it begins.
NATURALLY ………
With these fat fingers i type
First and foremost I have never thought i would find myself writing a blog as part of my school work nor would mugging be the same as blogging , well whatever the case I intend to enjoy myself here as i twirl around the world of communications with these whimsical thoughts of mine penned into words.
I shall first begin my first entry based on the very core principles of defining rhetoric

Audience (Psychological and emotional)
Instead of first evaluating on any news reports or magazine articles of that sort , I shall now examine the most important film of all , the movie of our lives ……… soundtrack included
The film begins like this with minimal dialogue but with subtitles which says
How many of you guys have ever asked a girl her number before ? wait but before you answer that let me list a few conditions . Firstly

Now to begin
KAIROS
Well cause u see i have been really wondering , when a guy of our age around teens to mid twenties , singapore brought up with the typical conservative background , when you do actually see a beautiful stranger ,a girl of such beauty and attraction that it warrants your attention so much so that it causes you to glance up a couple of times ( it is rude to stare by the way ) what do you do ?
You check around your surroundings making sure that no one is staring at you or noticing your sudden pauses and glances. Suddenly you have a hightened feel of things as your adrenaline races up to your mind, you check the surroundings once more making sure the TIME and SPACE is just right to decide your next move to tackle this sparkle standing in front of you. Is she alone ? Is she talking with her friends ? Does she seem to be waiting for someone? Hell I hope her mother is not somewhere nearby you mutter to yourself as beads of perspiration run down your once Biore facial washed laden skin. Once all that is done you then move to your next course of action.
DECORUM
What do you tell yourself to bring your legs of stone to travel that great distance of a few metres to stand beside her but more importantly what do you tell her straight after arriving at your destination. How does one employ the right WORDS to blend sweetly with the SUBJECT of telling her that she looks dashing to the point that you are interested in knowing her more and perhaps if hopefully her number too.
Usually one would probably asks what would be the right STYLE in going about this, well i am no expert but i would recommended the best style would most probably your very own. Say what comes to your mind first or what not at all , you would probably pause for awhile and suddenly feel yourself backing out at the last minute but do not forget this, be your honest self. The concept of ETHOS(The persuasive appeal of one’s character) If what you say turns out to be cheesy, your face starts to distorts and your hands find themselves feeling very so very numb and she starts to laugh and walks away, hey do not fret or be disheartened. You fought a good fight and what that does not destroy only seeks to make you stronger.
Even when your words may not make sense, remember that sometimes LOGOS (The Appeal to Reason) do bow out in the way of PATHOS. That means to say sincerity do indeed sound louder than the most sweetest of words.;

you could now either take a mental picture of her and tell your friends about it that you saw this pretty girl and THATS IT , the story ends there , you continue with your lives one day at a time and you get to know girls from ur class and friends and then u have a girl friend and then you get married and have kids. Maybe just maybe when you r old and lying on ur sofa with ur dog and your wife watching television in the background , you start to recall about all those times you glace at that beautiful stranger ………. the girl you so told your frens about , you think to urself “arhhh it would have been really interesting to put a name and a number to that beautiful stranger” but its too late . Probably shes married and have kids and shes sitting down on her sofa watching television, thinking abt a not so handsome guy frm a time long ago who was staring at her( its hard not to stare i admit ) , “it would have been interesting to know him anyway” she thinks !!!
As Aristotle puts it “To be conscious that we are perciving of thinking is to be consious of our own existence”
Stop for a moment and consider that
whatever we do in life echoes in eternity, i belive that whatever religion you are ,you would definetly believe in miracles for you never know if god has put a miracle in each of our days waiting for it to be discovered and if you had a chance to change all your unhappiness in ur life and for a moment in time you become a man greater than you usually are , because for that one time in your life you finally listened to your heart instead of listening to a mind that tells you to fear the unknown , to fear what could be actualy good for you
yes , she might be already attached , yes she might think u are weird , 90% of it will happen that way but a 10 % chance maybe she thinks your confidence is refreshing , is that 10% chance worth fighting for ? i will leave that to you
Approach the girl and just be yourself , you would probably stammer like crap but take your time , she might be a sales girl doing her job, she might be a waitress serving her drinks , she might be waiting for her friend , OR she might be waiting for you
